How to Configure Proxy on macOS (Sonoma, Sequoia & Ventura)
Updated:
Unlike Windows, macOS provides native username and password fields directly inside System Settings → Network → Proxies for both HTTP (Web Proxy) and HTTPS (Secure Web Proxy), storing credentials safely inside your macOS Keychain. You can also script proxy toggling per network interface using the built-in networksetup CLI utility.

macOS Network Proxy Protocols Explained
macOS lets you enable multiple proxy protocols simultaneously on a single Wi-Fi or Ethernet interface. When using VinaProxy paid proxies, enable both Web Proxy (HTTP) and Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS).
| macOS Proxy Toggle | Protocol Handled | VinaProxy Compatibility | Keychain Auth Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web Proxy (HTTP) | Plain HTTP traffic (port 80) | Full support (IPv4 & Static ISP) | Native Username & Password fields |
| Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) | TLS/HTTPS CONNECT traffic (port 443) | Full support (IPv4 & Static ISP) | Native Username & Password fields |
| SOCKS Proxy | SOCKS5 TCP streams | Free proxy list only (not paid plans) | Native Username & Password fields |
| Bypass proxy settings | Direct hosts & CIDR subnets | Recommended for *.local & 127.0.0.1 | N/A |
Step-by-Step Setup in macOS System Settings
bash
# Automate macOS Wi-Fi proxy setup from Terminal via networksetup
networksetup -setwebproxy "Wi-Fi" IP PORT on USER PASS
networksetup -setsecurewebproxy "Wi-Fi" IP PORT on USER PASS
# Turn off macOS Wi-Fi proxy when finished
networksetup -setwebproxystate "Wi-Fi" off
networksetup -setsecurewebproxystate "Wi-Fi" off
macOS Network Locations & Terminal Tips
- Use macOS Network Locations to switch between Direct and Proxy profiles in two clicks: open System Settings → Network, click the '...' circle menu at the bottom of the service list, choose Locations → Edit Locations, and create a dedicated 'VinaProxy' location.
- Note that macOS System Settings applies to Safari, Chrome, Brave, and native Apple apps, but Terminal CLI tools (curl, brew, git, python) require export HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY in ~/.zshrc.
Step by step
- 1
Open Network Details in System Settings
Click the Apple menu → System Settings → Network, select your active Wi-Fi or Ethernet service, and click 'Details...'.
- 2
Enable Web Proxy (HTTP) and Enter Credentials
Select the 'Proxies' tab in the left sidebar. Toggle 'Web Proxy (HTTP)' on, enter your VinaProxy IP in 'Server' and port in 'Port', check 'Proxy server requires password', and enter your Username and Password.
- 3
Enable Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)
Toggle 'Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)' on and enter the exact same VinaProxy Server, Port, Username, and Password so encrypted HTTPS sites also route through the proxy.
- 4
Apply Changes and Verify in Safari or Chrome
Confirm the bypass list includes *.local, 169.254/16, 127.0.0.1, click OK, and open Safari to verify your egress IP and ASN.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my IP stay the same on HTTPS websites if I only enabled Web Proxy (HTTP) on macOS?
macOS separates plain HTTP and encrypted HTTPS proxy settings. Because almost all modern websites use HTTPS, you must enable both 'Web Proxy (HTTP)' and 'Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS)' in the Proxies tab.
Why does macOS ask to allow configd or Safari to access Keychain after setting a proxy?
macOS stores your proxy password encrypted in the login Keychain. Click 'Always Allow' when prompted so background networking daemons can authenticate seamlessly.
Does macOS System Settings proxy affect Terminal commands like brew or git?
No. BSD/Unix command-line tools on macOS read HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables from your shell profile (~/.zshrc), not the System Configuration framework.
