How to Configure Proxy in Google Chrome
Updated:
Clicking 'Open your computer's proxy settings' inside Google Chrome opens your operating system's global network dialog (Windows WinINET or macOS Network Settings), which changes the IP for your entire computer. If you want to isolate a VinaProxy HTTP(S) proxy strictly to Chrome—or assign a different proxy to each Chrome User Profile—use a browser extension (SwitchyOmega / FoxyProxy) or launch Chrome with --proxy-server and --user-data-dir flags.

Chrome and Firefox handle proxies differently
This difference decides which browser to use. If you only want one browser on a proxy while the rest of your computer stays on your normal connection, Firefox is the easier option.
| Question | Chrome | Firefox |
|---|---|---|
| Where the proxy is set | Windows or macOS system settings | Inside Firefox, Network Settings |
| What else is affected | Other apps that follow the system proxy | Only Firefox |
| Username and password | Asked in a sign-in pop-up | Asked in a pop-up, can be saved |
| Different proxy per profile | No, all profiles share it | Yes, each Firefox profile has its own |
3 Ways to Set a Proxy in Google Chrome
Compare the three ways to route Chrome traffic through a proxy so you don't accidentally reroute other desktop applications:
| Method | Scope | Per-Profile Isolation | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| SwitchyOmega / FoxyProxy Extension | Single Chrome profile only | Yes (each Chrome profile has its own extensions) | Daily browsing, QA testing, fast switching |
| CLI Flag (--proxy-server + --user-data-dir) | Isolated Chrome instance | Yes (separate data directory per launch) | Lightweight multi-profile shortcuts without extensions |
| Chrome Settings → Open computer's proxy settings | Entire OS (Chrome, Edge, Office) | No (system-wide) | Single-proxy workstation setup |
Step-by-Step Setup in Google Chrome
bash
# Launch an isolated Chrome instance with its own proxy on Windows
"C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" ^
--user-data-dir="C:\chrome-profiles\us-01" ^
--proxy-server="http://IP:PORT" ^
--disable-features=WebRtcHideLocalIpsWithMdns
# Launch an isolated Chrome instance on macOS
/Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome \
--user-data-dir="$HOME/chrome-profiles/us-01" \
--proxy-server="http://IP:PORT"
When to Upgrade from Chrome Profiles to an Anti-Detect Browser
- Standard Chrome profiles isolate cookies, localStorage, and extension proxy settings, but they still share the exact same Canvas, WebGL, AudioContext, font list, and hardware concurrency fingerprints.
- If you manage high-trust e-commerce or ad accounts (Facebook Ads, TikTok Shop, Amazon, Shopee, Etsy), use an anti-detect browser like Genlogin, GoLogin, or AdsPower instead of plain Chrome profiles.
Running several identities in one browser
Chrome profiles all share one system proxy, so they cannot each have their own IP. Firefox profiles can: create extra ones through the about:profiles page and give each a different VinaProxy proxy, for example one on a United Kingdom proxy and one on a Hong Kong proxy.
That is fine for a handful of identities. For many accounts, an antidetect browser (see our GenLogin guide) separates fingerprints as well as IPs.
Browser proxy troubleshooting
- Sign-in pop-up keeps returning: the username or password is wrong, or was typed with a space. In Chrome, close every window to clear the cached attempt and try again.
- Pages fail with a proxy connection error: check host and port in the system settings or in Firefox, and make sure the order is still active in Orders.
- IP check shows the wrong country or your own IP: in Firefox, confirm manual configuration is selected, not system settings. Then compare with the proxy checker.
- No internet after removing the proxy: the system proxy is still on. Turn off manual proxy setup in Windows or macOS.
Step by step
- 1
Option 1 (Recommended): Use SwitchyOmega or FoxyProxy per Chrome Profile
Install Proxy SwitchyOmega (MV3) or FoxyProxy inside your Chrome profile, add an HTTP proxy profile with your VinaProxy IP, Port, Username, and Password, and activate it.
- 2
Option 2: Launch an Isolated Chrome Profile via Command Line
Pass
--user-data-dirand--proxy-server="http://IP:PORT"when launching thechromebinary so that window runs in its own sandbox with a dedicated proxy. - 3
Option 3: System Proxy via Chrome Settings
Open
chrome://settings/system, click 'Open your computer's proxy settings', and configure the proxy in Windows Settings or macOS System Settings. - 4
Prevent WebRTC Local IP Leakage
Install the official WebRTC Network Limiter extension or set WebRTC IP handling policy inside your proxy extension so STUN requests cannot reveal your local network interface.
Frequently asked questions
Why does clicking Proxy Settings in Chrome open Windows or macOS settings?
Google Chrome does not have a built-in GUI proxy dialog of its own; by default it delegates to the host operating system's network stack unless overridden by a Chrome extension or the --proxy-server command-line flag.
Can I pass username and password inside Chrome's `--proxy-server` flag?
No. Chromium ignores user:pass@ inside --proxy-server for security. When Chrome opens, it will display a standard sign-in prompt once where you enter your VinaProxy username and password.
Can two Chrome profiles use two different proxies at the same time?
Yes! Each Chrome profile has independent extensions. Install SwitchyOmega or FoxyProxy in Profile A with Proxy 1, and in Profile B with Proxy 2.
Why can't I find proxy settings inside Chrome?
Chrome uses the operating system's proxy. Its settings page only links to the Windows or macOS proxy screen, which is where you enter the host and port.
Can I use a proxy in Chrome without affecting other programs?
Not with the built-in settings, since they apply system wide. Use Firefox, which has its own proxy settings, or a tool like Proxifier to choose which programs use the proxy.
How do I turn the proxy off again?
In Firefox, switch Network Settings back to no proxy or system settings. For Chrome, turn off manual proxy setup in the Windows or macOS network settings.
