How to turn off a proxy on phones, computers and Telegram
Updated:
A proxy left switched on is a common reason a device suddenly loses internet access after an order expires. This page collects the off switch for each device in one place. Every operating system stores its proxy in a different spot, so switch it off on the device and network that actually has the problem.
Turn off the proxy on iPhone and iPad
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the (i) next to the connected network, scroll to Configure Proxy, choose Off and tap Save. iPhone proxies belong to individual Wi-Fi networks, so if you set one on several networks, switch it off on each. If you use a separate proxy app, disconnect inside that app as well.
Turn off the proxy on Android
Open Wi-Fi settings, select the network you are on, tap edit or advanced options (labels vary by manufacturer), set Proxy to None and save. On emulators or devices where a proxy was set through ADB, run adb shell settings put global http_proxy :0 to clear it. If you installed a proxy app, stop its connection.
Turn off the proxy in Chrome
On Windows and macOS, Chrome has no proxy setting of its own; it uses the operating-system proxy. Settings > System > Open your computer's proxy settings in Chrome jumps straight there, so switch it off as described for Windows or macOS below.
If you set the proxy with an extension such as SwitchyOmega, open the extensions page and disable it or switch it to direct connection. If Chrome still shows ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED afterwards, an extension is almost certainly still holding a proxy.
Turn off the proxy on Windows 10 and 11
Open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. Windows 10: switch Use a proxy server to Off. Windows 11: under Manual proxy setup click Edit, turn off Use a proxy server and click Save. If Use setup script is on and you do not need it, turn that off too.
Some apps read a separate WinHTTP configuration; how to view and reset it is on the checking the proxy and firewall page. Edge follows this same Windows setting.
Turn off the proxy on macOS
Open System Settings > Network, select the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet service, click Details and choose Proxies. Turn off Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS) and SOCKS Proxy if any are on, then click OK. Safari and Chrome on the Mac connect directly right away.
Turn off the proxy in Telegram
Telegram keeps its own proxy setting, independent of the operating system. On Telegram Desktop go to Settings > Advanced > Connection type and disable the proxy. On mobile go to Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy and switch off the use-proxy toggle. Telegram stuck on connecting usually means the proxy is not answering; see proxy timeout.
Confirm it is really off
- Open what is my IP: it should show your ISP's address.
- If it still shows the proxy IP, another layer is active: an extension, a VPN, a proxy app or a different Wi-Fi network's setting.
- If nothing loads even with everything off, see checking the proxy and the firewall.
Step by step
- 1
Find where the proxy is set
Operating system, browser extension, proxy app or Telegram: each is switched off differently.
- 2
Switch it off in the system settings
Windows: Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. macOS: System Settings > Network > Details > Proxies. iPhone: Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Configure Proxy.
- 3
Disable extensions and proxy apps
Turn off Chrome proxy extensions and disconnect proxy apps on your phone.
- 4
Fully restart the browser or app
Quit and reopen so the app picks up the new configuration.
- 5

Open my IP and confirm it shows your real address.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning off the proxy cancel the proxy I bought?
No. It only stops using it on that device; the proxy line stays in your dashboard until it expires and you can turn it back on anytime.
I turned the proxy off and still have no internet.
Check VPNs, the firewall and the WinHTTP configuration; see checking the proxy and the firewall.
I turned it off on my home Wi-Fi but it still happens at a café.
On phones the proxy is saved per Wi-Fi network. The café network may still hold a configuration you entered earlier.
Do I need to turn off proxies inside an antidetect browser?
A proxy in an antidetect profile affects only that profile, not the whole device. To remove it, delete the proxy from the profile and save.
Proxy expired? Renew or buy new
